Choquequirao Hike 5 Days

The tour to Choquequirao 5 days; it is an impressive tour where we will be able to submerge in the narrow canyon of Apurimac to then make a ascent to the other side of the mountain, arriving at the archaeological site of Choquequirao, To make this hike is necessary a good physical preparation, but that the arrival will be a reward for the physical effort that you have done besides enjoying the beautiful views of the natural landscape.

The archaeological site of Choquequirao is nestled in a mountain on the right bank over the canyon of the Apurimac River. It is not as big as Machu Picchu because they are still excavating part of the archaeological site, but very probably more fascinating and the region is much more remote. This is a unique trek in the Andes that will offer you an unforgettable experience we are the only tour operator to offer you a visit to the Saywite remains and the Cconoc hot springs after this long hike!

Important notes:

The duration of the entire tour will depend on the rhythm of the group. The guide will be able to adapt the places for lunch and camping according to the physical condition of the group.

Each guide has their own way of leading their groups, but their decisions will always be for the benefit of the tourists.

CHOQUEQUIRAO. This is an adventure Trek, and to enjoy it to the fullest: bring an open mind, a positive attitude and a good sense of humor.

Tips for riders, cooks and guides are always welcome. The porters are also very grateful for a small donation, for example, clothes or school equipment for their children.

Travel Itinerary

Our adventure will begin when we pick you up at 6am and then take you in our private transport to the village of Capuliyoc (3150msnm). The trip will last about 4 hours, where we can enjoy beautiful views of typical villages, valleys and snow-capped mountains.

At this point the porters will be waiting for us, along with our horses. Our trek begins with a lot of enthusiasm, our walk begins with an ascent for about 3 hours and then arrive at the town of Chiquisca for lunch.

We will enjoy the view over the Apurimac Canyon and the Padreyoc snow-covered mountain (5571masl), as well as the location of Choquequirao. After lunch we return to our two-hour walk to the town of Chiquisca (1900 masl) where a delicious lunch awaits us. We enjoy the tropical stillness of the place and spend the night.

To start the day we will cross the river over a pedestrian bridge. From here we walk uphill to Marampata, a small meadow where we will enjoy lunch. As we climb the steep road, we will be able to appreciate the whole area of the canyon, its abundant vegetation and the environment that surrounds it.

The afternoon hike will not be so steep as we approach the valley that houses the Choquequirao complex. We camp in a flat area near the archaeological site that we can explore a little after lunch.

This third day follows will be the most exciting as we meet many travelers from this fascinating archaeological site.

Choquequirao is scattered on both sides of the Apu Corihuayrachina mountain and so far only 30% of the site has been discovered. The visit to the place will take us all day that we will be able to explore with tranquility and admire the different palaces, temples and ceremonial fountains a stupendous Usnu (ceremonial center) as well as the amazing agricultural terraces. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see a condor.

The name “Choquequirao” means: “Cradle of gold” in the Quechua language. It is another “lost city” that has been rediscovered at the end of the previous century and excavation and restoration work began in the 1990s. Today, research continues and archaeologists are discovering new vestiges.

At the end of breakfast this day we will begin our descents for two hours to cross the river Apurimac by the bridge of San Ignacio. During the descent we will enjoy breathtaking and unforgettable views of the Canyon and its vegetation.

We will continue the ascent for an hour and we can admire an imposing waterfall; we arrive at San Ignacio for lunch. Then we take again the walk by a moderate ascent through a valley and we arrive to Villa de Loros (2600masl) where we install our last camp.

This day will be a bit quieter, but more cultural, as after a delicious breakfast we board the transport that will take us to the archaeological site of Saywite.

There we can admire an Inca monolith, as well as several platforms and ceremonial fountains. Then we take the van and go to the Cconoc hot springs to relax and recover from the tiredness of the trek. After breakfast we return to Cusco and leave you at your hotel.
